The Cardio-And-Strength Workout New Yorkers Are Obsessed With

Ben Grieme

There’s a seemingly endless selection of boutique fitness studios to try in NYC, but when it comes to the best places to sweat it out, there are some that stand out among the rest. “The class” (no, really, that’s what it’s called) has built an almost cult-like following thanks to founder Taryn Toomey‘s unique blend of cardio and strength moves combined with her attention to emotional and spiritual wellness, too.

“The class is my favorite workout—there’s nothing like it and I’m pretty much addicted. I love it because it’s a total body and mind re-set. I leave feeling clear-headed, strong, confident, and ready to conquer my day,” says Liz Plosser, SELF’s deputy editor. “I also leave with quivery muscles in all the right places—it really zings your butt, abs, and inner thighs.” Christy Turlington Burns and Naomi Watts are also fans, and it’s nearly impossible to snag a spot in the almost-always sold out class.

Don’t let the zen vibe fool you, though—the workout is seriously tough, and Toomey isn’t one to let you slack off. Exercises typically last a whole song, which really pushes you to your limit. I learned this the hard way when I tried the workout. Even though I was ready to collapse by the end of our Down-Dog push-ups, Toomey motivated me to keep going (not that she really gave me a choice!). “She gets more sweat and effort out of me than any other instructor I’ve worked with,” agrees Plosser. “I think a lot of women feel the same way—we all thrive on the energy in the class and are bonded to each other through the experience.”

Emotional release is another big component of Toomey’s signature workout. During the exercises Toomey has you let go of your inner frustrations and stressors vocally—she prompts you to grunt and huff your way through the workout. Making all of the noises involved made me feel a little silly at first, but by the end I felt a definite sense of peace and ~positive energy~.

The NYC-based workout was so popular that Toomey brought her signature workout to Los Angeles in March 2016. If you’re not in either city, you can still try her mind-body class thanks to the exclusive routine below, courtesy of The Meatpacking District’s Sweat Sessions, a series of free outdoor workouts in NYC. There’s no equipment needed, so you can do it this routine anywhere, anytime. Get your game plan below, and be sure to Pin the workout graphic for easy reference.
